Well after some lovely family time and recovery from tripping around Rome (plus clothes washing) - it was time to sail to France. With Rob and Chris (and others) we took two cars across on the ferry from Portsmouth to St Malo.
The car ferry is huge and once on board it is like a cruise ship including a four course dinner. Then off to a cabin, as we arrive at 6am (leaving at 8pm) - had continental breakfast before driving south for three hours.
Rob's French house is just south of Bordeaux and north of the Loire Valley - below Nantes and in from La Rochelle. They have had the farm house for 20 years. We had a great bbq on the first night after shopping at Super U.
Next few days were spent eating and drinking cheeses, wines, meats, and a variety of items we do not normally have in Australia. Having nine people, meant practical things like cooking and washing up were done quickly.
A day at the sea-side - the Atlantic ocean at a place called Les Sables de L'Onne - this is where the Vendee Global (around the world) yacht race starts. It was cold and windy, but not raining - had fish with chips for lunch - so French. Again we did a bbq sea-food dinner of prawns, salmon and sardines and lots of salads.
Saturday morning involved watching the rugby union world cup games where England was beaten by France, but Wales won (as did Australia and New Zealand). An English couple who live in the same village Tbx, has sky TV and made bacon & egg rolls.
Then off to the markets at Fontenay la Comte - nice coffee and bought some presents.
The last dinner was a five course meal at La Mouliniere (the lake restaruant). It was excellent - great food quality and good choice of wines etc. I even had a Pernod to start!
Then up early to drive five hours to get the ferry back from Caen to Portsmouth.
The last week will be spent in London.
