The week started with the beginning of the Spring (second) semester at UWS. It has been decided that the School of Law will be separated from the College of Business and I have been named Dean-elect for the Law School. I take over as Dean (rather than my current role as Head of School) on 1st Janauary 2012 until 31st December 2015. I am excited at leading the Law School forward over the next five years.
It was also the 'Horses Birthday" - so I thought it was time to start running (jogging) again. So Monday, Wednesday and Friday, I managed 3km runs. On Saturday I ventured down to Manly and after buying some 2XU compression shorts (like Skins) completed a gentle 6km run.
Workwise had two highlights which included a really positive faculty (school staff) meeting and teaching a first year introduction to business law (IBL) tutorial. Since being Head/Dean, I have not taught an ordinary class for a long time. It was so much fun.
It was also Lucy's 19th birthday, which was a great family celebration. I drove her into a law tute in the City and we discussed law issues for most of the journey!
We managed to get to the movies to see 'Red Dog' - very Australian, but really enjoyable.
The other personal highlight is making plans for Sept/Oct when I am on study leave from UWS. The trip is to collect materials on European SMEs (small-medium enterprises) that are compared to Australian regulation. I fly to Berlin, Germany and then Rome, Italy and finally, London, England. All are great cities with different histories and very different laws and regulations per country. Europe is complex as there are domestic laws as well as European Union laws.
More details will follow of this trip.
This week has been glorious in Sydney with ten days above 20C and lots of sunshine - not a bad winters week. But next week, it is back to rain and 14C average. That will make running and jogging much harder....

Congratulations Michael. Your recognition is commendable, well deserved.
ReplyDeleteNow of course you’ll be covering a wider area of responsibility. I’ll look forward to reading here more of your thoughts, analyses of the many issues that presently focus on the Separation of Powers.
Congratulations too on getting back into active sports. Great to hear you’ve “hit the ground running”….! ;-)
The stats speak for themselves with a high ration of success and low recurrence rates among former and recovering patients who engage in strong, regular exercise and especially in active and regular sports.
Keeping awareness levels up is a constant campaign, something that occupies so many volunteers and efforts like the “Greatest Shave” and the South Aussie cyclists.
Your efforts and forthcoming tour of London must surely augur well for Boris and his hard work there for London next year?
Providing, of course, he’s cleaned things up in time after the present appalling anarchy and rioting has subsided.
And that’s another test for the processes and keeping of the Rule of Law isn’t it?
No doubt the UK courts will be working even harder with the present civil unrest?
Keep up the good work: more power to your legs…! ;-)
- Theo.
